Ethiopia’s parliament voted on Tuesday to ban all foreign adoption due to concern of abuse and neglect of the adopted children.
Adoptions have been suspended in Ethiopia for 7 months now according to the @NPR reports.
The associated press originally stated that the new guidelines state that Ethiopian children should be raised in their home country where they can honor their culture and traditions.
“They should either be adopted locally or supported by a guardian family, tutor or help them to reunite with biological parents or relatives, ” the law states.
This decision was based on several high profile cases of neglect, exploitation and abuse.
A white evangelical fixation on adopting children from war-torn countries led adoption agencies to allow kids who weren’t orphans to be adopted. In that particular case, agencies would take the children from their homes to a different region of the country and would claim the children were abandoned as Mother Jones and the New Republic originally stated.
This decision will go into effect in the coming weeks once it is published in the government legal gazette.
