Emmanuel Kidega Samson, 25, opened fire at a church near Nashville, TN on Sunday. He left one parishioner dead and six others wounded.

This is the detailed encounter of the shootings:

The gunman opened fire in the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ parking lot, killing Melanie Smith, 39, of Smyrna, Tenn. A witness said congregants hid under pews or in the bathroom when they heard gunshots. The shooter then entered the church wearing a mask and carrying two guns. He walked through the church silently, shooting six more people before being subdued. Robert Engle, 22, tackled the gunman and held the man until police arrived. One church member stated that without Engle she thought the shooting would have been worse. No motive has been determined.

Nashville police have charged Mr. Samson with one count of number and said additional charges will follow. The FBI and Justice Department have launched a hate-crime investigation into the shooting.
