Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta Judges Join Forces to Shut Down the Prison Pipeline

Four African American Women judges from two different sororities are joining together to pull kids out of the prison pipeline in Texas.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha members include judges Amber Givens-Davis, Stephanie Mitchell and Lisa Green. Delta Sigma Theta is represented by Judge Shequitta Kelly.

These four powerful women are all criminal judges and have all joined forces in order to help out the Dallas youth. The purpose of the Pipeline of Possibilities is to serve as an alternative to the school to prison pipeline, which seems to disproportionately impact black males more than any other race. The black students represent 31% of school arrests and are 3 times more likely to be expelled than the others.

The program includes a series of classes that cover the following topics: an overview of the criminal justice system, personal presentation that includes much needed advice on social media presence, advice and perspective from people who made it out of the criminal justice system, college and career exploration, and relationship building with Dallas law enforcement.

The four judges partnered with the African American Success Initiative (AASI) to create the program and put it into local high schools.

“I believe it is this type of programming that shows the commitment of the community, not only willing to share their professional experiences, but rather a vested interest in the growth and development of young people,” AASI Coordinator Jamila Thomas told The Hub.

The stated mission of Pipeline to Possibilities is to educate “youth on various aspects of the justice system & inspiring youth to become leaders in society.”

We are excited to see where these ladies take this program. How are you feeling about the issues they are addressing?

It’s Your World.
